Meet Coke (black male), Cola (his sister, tortie) and Haggis (grey male - their friend). They are semi-feral cats and are looking for a farm or other rural setting where they could keep the rodent population in check in exchange for board and lodgings.
Coke and Cola were rescued along with their mum Libby and 2 other siblings in September 2009. Libby had been someone's pet at some point but had either got lost or was abandoned and had not been spayed. She was being cared for by a kindly lady who had taken pity on the pretty little cat camped out in her back garden. She called SHUA because Libby was limping (she had a collar injury - it had caused a wound in her armpit) and also because Libby had given birth to 4 kittens in the neighbour's shed!
We went to the property armed with everything - traps, food, nets, gloves, the works - not knowing what situation we would face. As it turned out, all 4 kittens were in the shed. We boarded up some holes in the back of the shed, blocked the entrance and then carefully manouvred around some potentially lethal broken sheets of glass inside, managing to catch all 4 kittens relatively easily (which involved some very thick gloves for us and lots of hissing and spitting from them!).
Once back at SHUA, we settled Libby and her kittens into one of our Lindee Lu pens. We worked intensively with all 4 kittens but from the start, Coke and Cola were clearly more terrified and less willing to play with us than the other kittens. Their brother (also black) and sister (calico) came out to play a game of straws in hardly any time at all and after a lot of one-on-one working with them, these 2 were eventually rehomed. Libby was also rehomed. Coke and Cola have been at SHUA ever since.
Haggis - the grey cat - was probably someone's pet when he was a kitten. But when he started to grow, they lost interest in him. We found him trapped in a garden in Barry, where he had been continually thrown out, constantly begging for food and gradually learning to become more and more fearful of humans. Haggis was rescued along with 4 young kittens and several adult cats at Burns Crescent. All of the adults were blood-tested and Haggis was negative - so he had to come back to SHUA with us. We have worked with him for several months but he is just plain scared. He has been pushed away too many times. Maybe with time and a lot of patience he will come around - but for now we feel that it would be better for his confidence to have some feline friends … which is why we introduced him to Coke and Cola.
Coke, Cola and Haggis basically don't like or need people - except of course for needing food and lodgings! They are all spayed, neutered and microchipped and are looking for a work-placement in a rural setting. They would happily help keep out the vermin in exchange for food and perhaps a barn to shelter in. Do you own a farm or a stables or perhaps an industrial unit - or know someone who does? It could be the perfect home for these guys to start afresh and leave their troubled pasts behind them.
If you would like to offer Coke, Cola and Haggis board and lodgings, then please get in touch.
