This is Aluwyshus. And this is what a cat who has been involved in a serious RTA (road traffic accident) looks like. The driver, quite typically, didn't bother to stop. Aluwyshus was left for dead. His skull was fractured (which is why his right ear appears lop-sided); his cheekbones were fractured; his pelvis was badly fractured, which is why his tail is limp; and he has extensive bruising all over his body. The poor little chap is on painkillers every day.
Aluwyshus was in the vets for several days before they released him to us. His pupils, as you can see, are very dilated and he was completely blind at first. However, after just a few days at SHUA he seemed to be getting some vision back - he would follow your hand with his eyes, even if they couldn't focus properly.
Thankfully, Aluwyshus has a fighting spirit. And he is quite determined not to have strict pen rest in spite of what the vets said. So every day we carefully take him out of his pen and allow him to wander around the kitchen in the utility block. When a cat has a fractured pelvis, you have to pick them up very carefully - and in the same way that you would a pregnant cat. Our vets showed us how to do this but bless him he is bruised all over and it is so difficult to move him without it causing him pain. But he is very insistent about coming out of the pen! All he really wants - as we found out on the first occasion that we did this - is to find a lap, sit down on it (very gingerly and after much fuss trying to find a comfortable position) and have cuddles. If you don't sit down on the floor with him then he tries to climb up stuff to get to you (as SHUA webmaster found to her horror when taking these photos!!).
Aluwyshus is a very gentle, loving boy. Since he is long-haired, his new family would need to be prepared to make a commitment to brushing him every day. He will need lots more pen rest and a final check over from our vets before he can go to a home but you would be welcome to come a meet him in the interim (with a view to reserving him).
If you would like to adopt Aluwyshus, please read our adoption policy and then get in touch to arrange an appointment.
