SHUA received a phonecall from a veterinary surgery saying that a stray tom cat that had been involved in a road traffic accident had been brought in. He was badly injured and needed to have his back left leg amputated. If SHUA agreed to take Bruce in, they would operate - if not, Bruce would have been put to sleep.
Bruce does fine on three legs and in fact is faster than any other cat that SHUA has seen!
When Thomas was the alpha male cat at SHUA, Bruce was his second-in-command. He acted as peace-keeper, not allowing anyone to fight. We all thought that when Thomas retired, Bruce would take over. However, when Thomas did finally step down (he was fairly elderly and a bit senile), Bruce opted for early retirement and let Fabia (a young female cat) take the reins instead.
Both Bruce & Thomas, who have (by choice) been outdoors cats throughout their time at SHUA, have now moved themselves into the conservatory (the 'silly old sods' wing, as we call it) and are enjoying their retirement.
