Keira came to SHUA in March 2008. She had been found straying by one of our supporters. Although we'll never know for sure what had happened, her behaviour was consistant with a cat who has been abused. She was so stressed out that we couldn't even touch her for days - she was completely off the wall.

Over the next few weeks, she started to calm down and understand that we meant her no harm. She started to accept strokes and cuddles but would then lash out for no reason. Even though this reaction was clearly the result of her past trauma, it meant that we could not rehome Keira and so she became a permanent resident.

Just as we had suspected all along, over the coming weeks we slowly saw the highly strung, unpredictable and fearful behaviour disappear, revealing a really sweet, loving and affectionate girl. Keira still didn't like other cats or the dogs, but rather than attacking them, she simply learned to steer clear. She started to enjoy herself.

Keira was an inquisitive and loyal little friend. She would always come to greet you and would follow you around the grounds as you did your chores, happy for the company and offering the occasional headbutt in exchange for a cuddle.

But just as she was finding her feet, tragedy struck. On the morning of the 28th of July, Kay looked out of the bedroom window to see a lifeless cat lying on the road outside the house. She raced downstairs and outside to find Keira's body. She had been run over; mercifully she had been killed outright - it had been very quick.

Keira only had 4 months at SHUA. It is so tragic that she only knew love, trust and happiness for such a tiny fraction of her short life. She was just a misunderstood little cat and we were all very saddened to have our new and dear friend taken from us. She had so much love to give and so many adventures ahead of her. We hope she has found peace.
