Griffindor came to SHUA in August 2006 after being rescued from a garage where she had been repeatedly abused. One of her back legs had been broken and was never treated - which must have been agonising. It had reset by itself and was useless. Griffindor was so terrified of people that it took more than a week for her not to go and hide on sight of us. We would have to get down on hands and knees on the floor to make ourselves less intimidating and, with lots of kind words and a gentle fuss, she would slowly come out from behind the table. She would then climb up onto your lap and have a cuddle. She adored cuddles. She had obviously had so few of them in her life and wanted to make up for lost time. She had clearly not had a loving, safe home for many, many years.
Tragically, Grifiindor was only with us for approx. 3 weeks. She had a tumour lower down her back, underneath her spine. It was pressing down on her nerves and also her other organs and eventually lost use of her entire back end. She never complained even once.
We did the kindest thing we could and had her euthanased on the 18th of September. We were all devastated - she should have had more time to know love and kindness, to try to write over all of abuse and torture she had suffered over the years. She died never knowing what it was like to feel totally safe and secure. We didn't have enough time with her to gain her trust completely. This is the very least we feel we can ask for the elderly and infirm who come to us - that they know true love and happiness. It upsets us all that Griffindor died without feeling 100% safe and secure.
We hope and pray that you have no more fears wherever you are now, Griffindor, and that you are restored to health and vitality. Rest in Peace.
