Digby came to SHUA in the Autumn of 2006. We'll never know for sure, but we strongly suspected that he had been abused. He would love a fuss and a cwtch but sometimes, without warning, would bite or scram. This sort of behaviour usually means that the cat doesn't know when you are going to nice or going to hurt him. It usually means their trust and confidence in humans has been broken by previous experiences with humans.
We worked with Digby for many months and, the following April, felt that we had progressed far enough to put him up for rehoming. We had already moved Digby to our acclimatisation pen with a little cat called Beauty, ready for release into our colony in case we could not rehome him. Noone wanted Digby and so, the summer, we released Digby and Beauty into our colony.
Beauty thrived; Digby disappeared. We searched high and low for him but there was no trace. A month later, Digby finally turned up. He had decided to move in further down the road - where another of our trustees lives. In addition to his own "pet" cats, he feeds a few stragglers and didn't mind one more joining his little colony. We were relieved.
Tragically, Digby was killed on the road only a few months later. He is one of the troubled souls that we tried our best to save but couldn't. We can only hope that he is finally at peace.
