Custard came to SHUA in August 2006. As you can see, he was in a bit of a mess. We had a phone call from a member of the public asking if we could take in a stray ginger cat that had recently turned up in their street. They said that a disabled neighbour was currently caring for the cat and that she would get in touch to make arrangements for us to come down and collect the cat.
So, we waited for the call. Sure enough, later on that day a disabled lady called and said that she had taken in a ginger cat that had been straying - could we take the cat into our shelter. So, we took down the necessary details and went to pick up the cat.
The following morning, we had a call from the lady who had originally rung us. She asked why we had not followed the call up. Confused, we replied that we had indeed picked up the cat the previous night, from the disabled neighbour. It turned out that this wasn't the same cat or the same disabled lady! What are the odds of that happening? So, we took down the address and went to pick up another ginger cat.
The two addresses were only a street away from each other and, oddly, the cats seem to know each other. We quizzed some of the neighbours and found out that 'Custard' and 'Caramel' had originally lived with a family in the house that corners the 2 streets where they were found. When the family moved house, they decided that they no longer wanted the cats and, as luck would have it, the people moving in agreed to adopt the 2 boys. Everything was fine but then the second family moved house and decided that they, also, didn't want to take the cats with them. The third family that moved in didn't want cats and so Custard and Caramel were turfed out. It would seem that one turned left and the other turned right in the search of food!
The two boys made it clear from day one that they had no need to stay together. So Caramel was rehomed and Custard was given resident status at SHUA. He joined our "Golden Oldies" in the conservatory but was one of our more mobile senior citizens and enjoyed walking around the gardens, soaking up the sunshine and exploring everywhere.
Custard was such a darling. He was just the sweetest, most affectionate old boy. Both him and Peril, another senior citizen who came to us at around the same time, loved to help us all with our chores. They would both follow you around, Peril doing his darth vadar impression (breathing really loudly) and Custard with his tongue sticking out of his mouth - two old farts!
Custard was with us for nearly a year before he was euthanased on the 25th of May 2007. He is missed by everyone - another big personality who we'll never forget.
